The Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami on March 11, 2011 took 15,883 lives and contaminated a large area of Fukushima prefecture with deadly radioactive material from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant meltdown.

The Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Japan has been active in efforts to protect the people in Kooriyama City, about 30 miles from the Fukushima Plant.

On Aug 6, 2013 GPF-Japan staff assisted the non-profit organization Fukushima Water of Life in distributing 560 alcohol sanitizers, donated by GPF partner Global Peace Women, to the people of Kooriyama City.

Fukushima Water of Life Service Project

Since May of 2011 Fukushima Water of Life has been distributing bottles of water, donated from many sectors of Japan as well as numerous other countries, and providing places for mothers to express their concerns. Though the risk from radiation continued, the support from volunteers to hand out the bottles had dwindled greatly and thus GPF-Japan felt called to lend its support.

“I am not clear about the level of the radiation contamination,” said one mother who came to the Fukushima Water of Life center on Aug 6. “I am very pleased to receive the safe water. I am suffering emotionally and economically every day.  I appreciate this program so much for supporting our health.  Please continue to support our children with safe water.”
