Fourteen Leap Hubs teachers from seven Nairobi schools participated in a two-day digital literacy and entrepreneurship workshop facilitated by Cisco Network Academy and the Centre for Mathematics Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA). The program, conducted from April 24 to 25, was initiated by Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Kenya as part of a series of teacher trainings for Leap Hubs and Character and Creativity Initiative (CCI).

The training workshop is timely in its relevance to the modern world. Not only is the program working in unison with the government’s vision to transform education in Kenya, but it also utilizes GPF’s unique approach to integrate character and creativity capacities to prepare both teachers and students for success in the twenty-first century said Director of GPF Kenya, Mr. Daniel Juma. “This training is critical in ensuring teachers receive the right skills that will allow them to take the lead in nurturing and building a positive culture in students.”

CCI incorporates top global leadership competencies employers are seeking from high school and college graduates entering the workforce, including creativity, vision and problem-solving, into all aspects of school culture to assist in the development of the whole person. This transformation of school culture is made possible through the empowerment of not only students, but especially through their teachers and principals. Teacher training workshops supports educators in learning practical technology skills as well as how to incorporate proficiencies like integrity, respect and resilience into the classroom environment, preparing students for an increasingly competitive employment landscape.

Participating teachers were grateful to receive the training, expressing their excitement to help their students realize their dreams. Anthony Baraza, a teacher from Maina Wanjigi High School who has been continuously working with GPF’s Leap Hubs stated, “We are always open to working with GPF to translate our trainings into our teaching in schools. We know our students will appreciate it.”

Teachers who have attended the trainings have reported a noticeable difference in their students’ positivity and achievement in the classroom as a result of the CCI and Leap Hubs programs. Students who have received mentorship in leadership, innovation, marketing, finance and the many other guidance areas of Leap Hubs are eager to welcome new partners to offer their own encouragement and advice.

GPF Kenya continues to collaborate with partners including Oracle, IBM and Andela to ensure future trainings and implementation of capacity-building workshops to assist Kenyan teachers and students in the coming years.
