A team of renowned music producers—composer Kim Hyung Seok, musical director Koleen Park, and lyricist Kim Lee Nah—announced that they are producing a new song that captures the spirit of reunification at a special press conference at the Korea Press Foundation in Seoul on April 30.

The song is part of a larger Korean Reunification campaign that is gaining momentum, bridging old political and ideological divides, and drawing the support of several major religious and civil society organizations, as well as notable leaders from the Korean diaspora. The grassroots movement is spearheaded by Action for Korea United, a coalition of more than 600 civil society organizations promoting peninsular reunification. The Global Peace Foundation is a founding member of the coalition.

Kim Hyung Seok and Kim Lee Nah told the press their song is modeled after the “We Are the World” anthem of the 1980s, to inspire a generation with a vision for Korean reunification. Amidst political turmoil and social unrest, the song is an opportunity to heal 70 years of division that has drawn cultural, social, political and ideological lines

The song will be released in August, in time for the Unification Festival to be held on October 9 at the Seoul World Cup Stadium. Event organizers anticipate that many Korean wave idols will also perform the song.

Plans are unfolding for a nationwide campaign to promote everyday ways to work toward reunification leading up to the star-studded festival. Already the campaign has received support from the Korean diaspora community. Loyola University professor Ryu Jai Poong and his son Marcus Ryu, have pledged significant financial support for the campaign.
