“As a former drug addict, sharing my journey during the program was cathartic. I hope my story resonates with others facing similar struggles. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness; it’s a courageous step towards a positive future. Together, we can overcome the challenges of addiction and build better lives.”

Josaya shared his challenging journey to recovery from drug addiction at a workshop organized by Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Nigeria and the AMAYA Peace Foundation on February 15, 2024.

The event brought together more than 100 people who spread awareness of the detrimental effects of illicit drug abuse in Southern Kaduna.

Rev. Ishaku Maman extended a warm welcome while emphasizing the collective effort required between community members and security agencies to combat drug abuse and foster peaceful coexistence in the country.

Representing GPF Nigeria, Sheikh Halliru Maraya challenged attendees to uphold the vision of “One Family Under God,” emphasizing the shared origin of humanity to urge them to work together in resolving the pressing issues of drug abuse. The problem has caused devastating consequences, including violence, crime, and societal instability.

Rev. John Joseph Hayab, Country Director for GPF Nigeria, gave a compelling speech cautioning young people to protect themselves from the “pitfalls of illicit drug use.” Drawing from personal experiences, he narrated a visit to youths in Kasuwan Magani in 2020, where the initial fear and mistrust from the youth were eventually dispelled through genuine efforts to establish rapport and understanding.

Rev. Hayab highlighted both the mentorship role of religious leaders and the need for security personnel to adopt more compassionate and rehabilitative strategies rather than resorting solely to arrests. He envisioned a future where the Global Peace Foundation would actively engage with and support individuals struggling with drug addiction through various means, including economic empowerment and educational opportunities.

In his closing remarks, Rev. Hayab challenged the attendees to champion the cause of peace in their communities as members of One Family Under God, expressing a vision where positive change in Kafanchan could ripple throughout Southern Kaduna.

The event also featured inspiring testimonies from people recovering from drug addiction.

“As a law enforcement officer, witnessing the community’s commitment to addressing drug abuse was truly inspiring,” said officer Yuhana Bawa. “The testimonials shared during the event highlighted the real impact of substance abuse. I urge those involved to take heed of the advice shared and collaborate with authorities for a safer community.”
