Unethical leadership, corruption and irresponsible governance are causes for political instability in many African countries, retired Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume said yesterday at the opening of the Global Peace Leadership Conference (GPLC) here.

“It is unfortunate that many leaders in Africa put their personal interest first and always the national or people issues are ignored,” Mr. Karume told delegates of the conference.

He said due to irresponsible governance, many leaders in Africa also violate their countries constitution, resulting into political crisis and unnecessary disputes which hamper development efforts.

“It is a pity that Africa still has leaders who do not want to respect their countries’ constitutions. Such leaders always think they are superior compared to other citizens. It is wrong perception that undermines growth of democracy,” Mr. Karume said.

Delegates of the two-day conference, who include retired national leaders, will deliberate on peace, security and sustainable development in the East African region with emphasis on moral and innovative leadership.
