The launch of the Grow-a-Classroom tree planting project at Ngara Girls High School in Nairobi concluded a four-week training program for Global Peace Country Ambassadors.

The Global Peace County Ambassadors (GPCA) are prominent Kenyan personalities who volunteer their time, talent, and passion to raise awareness of the Global Peace Foundation peacebuilding efforts to improve the lives of people within their counties and communities.

In October 2021, more than 50 Global Peace County Ambassadors attended online discussions and training on leadership and community development over four weeks. The training included an introduction on environmental conservation and climate change; disaster management and preparedness; environmental conservation through tree planting; and the launching of the Grow a-Classroom project at Ngara Girls High School.

More than 100 people, including students, joined the school project with the support of the Architectural Association of Kenya.

The online program invited expert presenters such as Damaris Mungai, the Youth and Gender Portfolio officer for UNEP-Africa.

The GPCA program seeks to promote a collective national peace effort, replicating best practices and raising the voices of national and county volunteering services for better impact.

Architects and Landscape Architects chapters are also collaborating with GPF Kenya on a 5-to-10-year tree planting project to build capacity in sustainable use of timber construction material while contributing to the national goal of achieving over 10 percent tree cover by 2030.

Ongoing environmental restoration plans include tree planting activity, among other initiatives to foster a culture of volunteerism and service.

Supported by  Global Peace County Ambassadors, these efforts will be shared with other GPF regional offices and partners across Kenya’s 47 counties, with guidance from the Kenya Forestry Service and Kenya Forestry Research Institute on appropriate species selection and seedlings supplies.

By devolving peace and youth leadership to the grassroots levels across the country, the GPCA program seeks to focus on strengthening county to county relationships and unity, while supporting youth leadership, volunteerism, and green initiatives as a means of mitigating youth unemployment.
