H.E. Mwai Kibaki

President of the Republic of Kenya (2002-2013)

H.E. Mwai Kibaki is President of the Republic of Kenya. He entered public office in 1963, winning election as MP and serving as parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Finance from 1963 to 1965. In 1965 he was appointed a minister at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, where he served until 1969. Kibaki was re-elected in 1974 and re-elected in subsequent balloting in 1979, 1983 and 1988. Kibaki was appointed Vice-President in 1978 when Daniel Arap Moi assumed the presidency following the death of Kenya’s founding President, Jomo Kenyatta. Kibaki founded the Democratic Party on December 25th, 1991, which became the official opposition party. Kibaki was sworn in as Kenya’s third President on 30 December 2002.
