allAfrica reports “Tanzania: Retired Leaders Converge in Zanzibar to Talk Peace”

Zanzibar — The Global Peace Leadership Conference (GPLC) on peace, security and sustainable development opens in Zanzibar today, the organising team said.

Opposition leader from Kenya, Mr Raila Odinga, is expected to give a keynote address during the conference to be opened at the Zanzibar Beach Resort.

Zanzibar President Ali Mohammed Shein was expected to officiate the meeting but he has travelled to UK. Others expected to attend the four-day Zanzibar conference are former Zambia President Rupiah Banda and former presidents Amani Abeid Karume (Zanzibar), Olusegun Obasanjo (Nigeria), GirmaWolde- Giorgis (Ethiopia) and James Mancham (Seychelles).

A separate meetings involving youth will be held at the hotel, while the elderly and other leaders from the region would proceed with their meeting at the Melia Hotel in the North of Unguja islands.

According to Mr Rashid Kibao, one of the organising team leaders said the meetings will examine innovative interfaith and youth engagement approaches to addressing identity based conflict.

“Delegates will consider best practices and proven models that will facilitate interfaith partnerships in the region, based on universal principles and shared values, in order to reduce identity-based violence.
