University of Maryland’s Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity was the first Greek organization in the United States to become a certified Safe Haven, an organization trained in human trafficking awareness and response.

A year later, members hosted a training session on campus, helping eight new fraternities and sororities become Safe Haven certified.

During the training, Louise Dickson, volunteer coordinator for the Safe Haven Campaign, said people do not realize that human trafficking is a problem in the United States and that the growing crime is “at this point, an epidemic.”

Alpha Sigma Phi’s leadership, Brooks Gearhart and Kodiak Carb, stressed the importance of tackling the human trafficking issue and said awareness is the best weapon against it. They plan to spread awareness throughout the university’s Greek life community and the entire student body.
