In celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. about 20 people marched by flashlight from the Yellowstone County Courthouse lawn to the NOVA Center for the Performing Arts.

Then about 40 others joined them for a celebration called “Standing on the Shoulders” in which local artists played music, sang, danced and read poetry and community members offered their thoughts and prayers.

Co-organizer Mike Yakawich of the Global Peace Foundation, called Martin Luther King, Jr. Day events part of the community’s “culture of service.” About fifteen volunteers spent half a day cleaning and painting at Friendship House on Saturday.

“We didn’t just talk service,” he said. “We exemplified it.”

Monday’s Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration was the community’s 12th.
